Summary of experience

Content and communications for internal and external digital and print media

Copywriting

At the London Ambulance Service, I wrote daily news stories for the intranet and repurposed long form copy for social media channels, public facing news, and a print magazine. I interviewed staff across the organisation, checked facts, and secured quote attribution approvals to create copy at speed in a fast-moving environment.

At Mace, I wrote content in clear English from complex policy, technical, and legal documents for a new human resources website and chat function. I also created editing, quality assurance and approval workflow systems for content experts and managers.

I wrote news and pages for the Institute of Physics, page introductions at the Greater London Authority, and most recently, search engine optimisation (SEO) copy for Barrow Cadbury pages.

I have written commercial copy on yachting holidays, how to hire an electrician, and a range of other subjects for the online copy agency Copify.

Content management

At the Greater London Authority, I managed the public and internal websites, and a team of content designers. I introduced new data governance protocols, design templates and scheduling, and an annual content calendar aligned to strategic priorities.

At Wellcome, where I was the content lead, I created new written and visual content channels for the internal communications site. I curated the home page, managed the content calendar, edited videos and transcripts, wrote content, and trained writers.

Content design

At the Greater London Authority, I used Drupal 9 and 10 to design pages, underpinned by edits to Government Digital Service standards, analytics, and user research. I worked with stakeholders at all levels to understand the content’s purpose and audience.

At the Institute of Physics, I used Drupal 8 to create pages, editing complex copy with subject matter experts and senior stakeholders, and creating channels for approvals.

Digital editing

At the Insitute of Physics I edited content, built search-friendly pages in Drupal 8, used Photoshop to size pictures, and presented to internal stakeholders and content owners on website best practice as part of my remit to raise editorial standards.

I edited for style and tone of voice consistency and fact checked copy. I helped to develop and manage architecture and taxonomy and advised authors and departmental heads on digital trends as part of change management, while working with web developers and senior stakeholders on timelines, process, and challenges.

As a communications advisor for the public sector organisation, the Independent Office for Police Conduct (IOPC), I managed migration of the research and learning section of the new site, consulting on templates, and edited content to new wireframes.

While with the Museum of London, I worked closely with developers, content owners and stakeholders as I edited copy for search engine optimisation, brand, style, and tone of voice consistency, created introductory copy and captions, and built pages in Drupal.

Journalism

I trained as a journalist at the University of Arts, and worked as writer and sub editor at IPC (now Time Inc), EMAP and Dennis Publishing, on magazines that included Woman’s Own, Smash Hits, Just Seventeen and MacUser. I also wrote for independent newspapers and magazines City Limits, Everywoman. Pink Paper and Capital Gay.

Strategic communications

At the IOPC, I suggested and carried out the re-positioning of its flagship print and online publication, Learning the Lessons, using a re-design and improved distribution channels to reach a wider audience of criminal justice agencies, beyond police custody.

At the Greater London Authority, I managed a team of four, reviewed and created workflow processes, introduced content planners and calendars, and documented best practice. I worked at senior levels to support closer partnerships between departments, a more nuanced alignment of marketing and digital strategies, and strategic changes to improve internal communication, workflow and productivity.

Consultancy

At the National Council for Voluntary Organisations, I worked on blogs, case studies and news pages across a suite of content management systems that included WordPress and Joomla. Later, I returned as a consultant to make recommendations for commissioning, content development, and removal of inaccurate, outdated, or low-view content.

I was a digital editor and consultant at the international membership organisation, the Institute of Physics, where I advised on the scope and timelines of a web migration project.

Project management

At the IOPC I managed production scheduling, edits, day-to-day amendments using InDesign, workflow of inhouse and external designers, stakeholder consultations and approvals, print and digital formatting, and website uploads. I also managed delivery of translation and specialised editorial services across the organisation.

I have used Trello boards, Microsoft Teams, Jira, and Outlook for project management.

I was founder and co-editor of the lesbian magazine Quim, commissioning new fiction and art, writing and editing, and managing print production and distribution.

Soft skills

Along with a portfolio of digital and print accomplishments, I have a collegiate approach and persuasive influencing skills. I combine a listening ear, and nose for storytelling with my knowledge of digital and print best practice and my enthusiasm for editorial excellence.
